Con Crud

Page history last edited by Garand 10 years, 6 months ago Saved with comment

Con crud is the general term for any illnesses picked up during a convention.

With 35,000+ people in a three-city-block area it shouldn't be surprising that some folks are wiping their nose on their hands and then caressing every common surface available, from handrails to elevator buttons to your food at a restaurant. It's entirely common to leave Dragon Con with a cold, the flu, a norovirus, or Swine Flu (the CDC identified Dragon Con 2009 specifically as a hotspot for the spread of swine flu, though fortunately there was no major outbreak). The resultant illness tends to be called con crud. Sometimes it is also called the 'con plague' or 'con funk', though the latter will also sometimes be used to refer to that general smell of many unwashed bodies.

If you want to avoid the dreaded con crud or prevent being one of the people spreading it, try to adhere to a few of the following:

  • Wash hands frequently. Hand sanitizer is good, but soap and water is better.
  • Take vitamins before and during the con to help boost your immune system.
  • Don't share drinks, even with your BFFs or family members, even if you do at home.
